Happy Mother's Day from Mercantile

Posted on March 31 2019

As a tribute to all those who 'mother' around the globe; those who advise, encourage and nourish - metaphorically as well as literally we ask three women who shape the Mercantile ‘family’ a few questions surrounding mothering, motherhood, and how they will spend the day.

How many children do you have and what are their age?

Two girls, 17 and 18

How is your mother reflected in you?

I’m more like my Dad in many ways, but I’ve inherited a thirst for knowledge from Mum, a tolerance and broader perspective of the world, a love of travel and adventure and a sense of compassion.

Most useful piece of advice about motherhood you've been given?

Make the most of it while they are young as it’s gone in an instant.  I can appreciate that more now the second is preparing for University, time does fly when you're so busy with them.

What do you feel is the biggest misconception about being a mother?

That it’s expected of us, that we take to it naturally, that we're good at it with or without good training.

What gift would you really love for Mother’s Day?

Time with my Mum while she's still around, maybe when I was younger I didn’t give her as much time as I should have, so I try to make up for it now.

How will you celebrate the day?

With my Mum and my youngest, we plan to be together, possibly a rummage through the photo box and a walk down memory lane, they both like that and so do I.

How many children do you have and what are their age?

I have two boys; Ben is 2 years and Liam 4 months.

How is your mother reflected in you?

I think we have the same mannerisms as often people say we look alike even though we are very different physically. I got a lot from my mum personality wise and since becoming a mother I realise it’s even more then I thought :)

Most useful piece of advice about motherhood you've been given?

Yes - you try and do your best everyday- but your best is not the same everyday: some days life just makes it that your best is more of 'passable'. Sometimes just putting the kids to bed still breathing is a good enough job.

What do you feel is the biggest misconception about being a mother?

That to be a 'good' mother you have to love EVERY second of motherhood. I learned that sometimes some moments (or even days) are just, difficult/ annoying/ boring or hard and acknowledging that is important. It doesn't take away from the bigger experience.

What gift would you really love for Mother’s Day?

A day without the kids off course :) both are still very little so not going to happen any time soon ha!

How will you celebrate the day?

Mothering! Hopefully mothering with a nice breakfast and a ray of sun.

How many children do you have and what is their age?

My son Arlo, who will be 3 in June and I have one on the way, due end of May.

How is your mother reflected in you?

My mother is classically Brazilian looking, black hair, dark eyes and skin, whilst I’m not…! Character wise, I have her self-determination.

Most useful piece of advice about motherhood you've been given?

You’ll make mistakes, so try to forgive yourself.

What do you feel is the biggest misconception about being a mother?

That there is a right way to mother. Motherhood is always evolving.

What gift would you really love for Mother’s Day?

A family photo shoot *hint hint* if my husband reads this.

How will you celebrate the day?

We’ve not made any plans yet, but breakfast or even a cup of tea in bed would be lovely.
