Sustainability sits at the heart of everything for the Muses: from their choice of materials, packaging, sourcing, production, shipping and business practices.
The candles are hand poured using 100% natural wax which is certified sustainable.
The pure brass containers can be reused, repurposed or recycled indefinitely.
The packaging and shipping materials are made from recycled material, FSC certified and fully recyclable.
They use as little plastic as possible and do not wrap their boxes in cellophane.
As a company they offset their carbon footprint and plant a tree for every candle sold.
The candles are made with a natural wax blend of bees, rapeseed, coconut and soy wax.
Some sources of soy wax are not regarded as sustainable due to impacts from intensive soybean farming processes like deforestation and displacement of small farmers and indigenous peoples. the Muses use a renewable soy wax product that is certified sustainable, biodegradable and manufactured from renewable sources.
The candles are made with a blend of essential oils and botanical fragrance oils.
They ensure they are produced responsibly in Europe, transported by ship and do not feature on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The oils used are free from petroleum, phthalates, parabens and sulphates.
The wicks are 100% cotton and lead-free.
Packaging & Materials
The containers are made from pure brass. Brass is a cradle-to-cradle metal, meaning that it is 100% recyclable and can be recycled or repurposed indefinitely - each time it is recycled into a new product, the properties of the metal are retained. It can have an endless life. No other material outside of metal can do this – not glass, ceramic, paper, wood or stone.
The candles are wrapped in 100% recycled tissue paper and tied with ribbon made from 100% post-consumer waste plastic bottles. The inserts are printed on recycled paper. The boxes are corrugated cardboard made from 100% recycled material, printed with water-based ink and sturdy enough to be used again. The tape used is made from coated brown paper, covered with natural rubber glue and 100% recyclable. These materials are accepted by most home recycling services in the UK.
The brand wick, mix, pour, label and finish our candles by hand, in small batches to ensure they do not over produce. Following this process also means they use less energy than larger, machine-led producers.
Shipping & Delivery
Whenever the Muses need to import supplies from overseas, they ensure this is done by sea freight, which has a lower carbon footprint than air freight.
They also use delivery companies that are committed to electric vehicles (and investing further in their fleets) and carbon offsetting.
As a small company the Muses are committed to offsetting their carbon footprint. They are members of Offset Earth, and offset their workforce carbon footprint, and work towards creating a climate positive workforce. They also plant a tree for every candle they sell.
BURN & USE GUIDE.
The candle containers are handcrafted by traditional metal smiths and are intended to be used for life. If you burn your candle for a long time, you may find smoke around the top of the container. This is perfectly normal. You can use a damp micro-fibre cloth to clean the soot away.
Always place your candle in a safe area on a heat proof, non-flammable surface where it can be seen and enjoyed. We suggest using a coaster or our marble lid/ trivet underneath your Muses candle.
The first burn is the most important. Burn your candle for approximately 3 to 4 hours the first time, or until the wax has melted to the edges. Wax has memory so if your candle doesn't burn to the edges on its initial burn, it will begin to tunnel through the centre of your candle.
After the initial burn light your candle for up to 3 hours at a time. The recommended burning time is between 1 ½ hours and 3 hours to get the best fragrance from your candle. Allow the candle wax to solidify before relighting.
Remove the tip of the wick before each burn. A small flower shape may have formed at the end of wick (this is perfectly normal). Simply remove the small petals with your fingers or carefully trim with a wick trimmer. The candles are natural and do not require ruthless trimming, because natural wax does not get as hot as synthetic wax, and the wick and flame should never get too big.
Keep the candle away from airstreams such as windows, fans or open AC vents as this will make the flame burn through the wax faster.
After extinguishing your candle with a snuffer (ideally), centre and straighten the wick (if it needs it), whilst the wax is still molten. Long and crooked wicks can create high flames, smoking or soot.
When your candle has 5mm of wax left at the bottom, it has finished and it is advised not to burn it further.
