With the unexpected heatwave continuing across the country the challenge to remain chic in the intense heat is proving rather difficult. Unlike our European cousins (well equipped with extensive hot weather wardrobes and air conditioning in every building) we seem to struggle in keeping from melting on the daily commute when the mercury rises.
Not to be defeated we are getting serious and investing in a few quality ‘throw-on-and-forget’ pieces that will ensure you can get through the day looking city appropriate. but keeping cool. Combine this with our tips below to making it through the heatwave in style.
Go natural.
Linen is an airy and absorbent fabric, so a summer favourite for a reason, also look out for other natural options in breezy silk and cooling cotton for the same results.
Volume is your friend.
Covering up with a long flowing, silhouette keeps you cooler as the air can freely circulate, so opt for something airy with lots of volume. Silhouettes that hang from the body and maxis that are loose and billowing are perfect.
Steer clear of dark skinny denim.
Summer can be difficult if you live your life in denim but pull on your usual skinny fit and you will regret it. Choose a relaxed boyfriend fit in a lighter shade or a chambray option to ensure you don’t pass out on the Tube.

Ditch the trainers (even white ones).
As with denim it’s just too damn hot to have your feet encased in anything. Leave the plastic slider for the pool and invest in a simple leather sandal that will go with everything. If you truly can’t bear to see your toes a minimal mule will have the same cooling effect. Choose a classic colour that will ensure you can revisit them for seasons to come.
Lighten up.
Not exactly cooling but definitely summer appropriate - try a rose colour frame in sunglasses, and swap your black leather tote for a bright colour option.
