The origins of Valentines actually dates back to the 3rd Century and was a Roman festival called Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival celebrated the coming of spring, and included fertility rites. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with: St. Valentine's Day. In the 19th century the custom of exchanging symbols of love and handwritten ‘Valentines’ became popular and it came to be known as a day of celebrating love and affection that endures today.
